I feel Barber has exaggerated the extent of American consumerism in international markets. The desire to survive (in our day in age this would be to get money) is natural for all humans. After all if you don’t get paid you don’t eat. But the desire to spend spend spend as Barber infers is not true for everyone. As the NBA article put it, some people aren’t so materialistic (as Kevin Durant plays for the love of basketball). Let’s not forget that for every materialistic celebrity out there you also have celebrities who are filthy rich yet choose to not consume (they may do the opposite and donate to charity). Even though American media has extended to international markets with the side effect of spreading American values, people in these markets may be too busy still trying to survive rather than consume.The Terminator, Clash of the Titans, and even Finding Nemo, have been translated and premiered in multiplex theaters around the world. Today, Hollywood works to produce more appealing movies with even more eye catching cinematic effects but the attraction to American films is a product of…
