Great post! I never thought of Barber’s ignorance as a form of imperialism in itself. After reviewing your post, Barber’s argument does seem a bit exaggerated. I doubt that the Coen brothers would agree with Barber in that their Cannes victory would forever change French cinema. It was just a one time victory for that particular movie in that particular pool of entrees. Additionally, movie profits don’t translate to great quality films. If anything, American films are more entertaining, in which case maybe these foreign markets should learn to produce more entertaining movies.My basic understanding is that “cultural exchange” is somewhat mutual interaction of different cultures while “cultural imperialism” is mainly one-way enforcement of a culture to others.
